How to Rig an Asymmetric Spinnaker on a Johnson or Melges A-scow or E-scow
It seems every spring I have to find this video and I always wished I had a simple written record of the steps, so here it is for myself and for others.
- Attach head to halyard, luff (green or blue) toward bow, halyard on port side of headstay
- Run the leech (red) to the clew
- Attach sheets to clew
- From the head, run the luff (green or blue) to the tack
- Make sure the tack line is running over the top of the spinnaker sheets and to port of the headstay
- Attach the tack line to the tack
- Ensure the douser runs under/to port of all lines and under the roller (if installed)
- Run from the head along the outside (if green/blue is to the bow and red to the stern, port side) of the kite to find the douser attachments
- Make sure the douser goes under the foot and then up through the ring (if present, typically on an A-scow) and to the loop, then tie it off
- Pull the ends of the spinnaker out on the deck, or up if there’s not much wind and then pull into the launcher hole with the douser
