Regular readers of this blog know that I’m a fan of open-access scientific publishing.

CTWatch Quarterly has an excellent collection of essays out on that subject. I won’t give you an overview here. You should just go read the summary and excerpts on Confessions of a Science Librarian, and follow his links to the articles themselves.

I’ve been accumulating various stories and other links for a while, meaning to write a post on each one. Normally these aren’t really worth a whole post, so I’m going to start combining them.

• Does global warming boost hurricanes? – A review of Chris Mooney’s Storm World
• Urban Cyclists’ Threat Guide: A review of hazards to cyclists in New York City. Pretty applicable to riding a bike in other cities, and a fun read.
• SciVee: Scientific videos alongside papers
• How to innovate like google: How to encourage yourself and others to be creative in their work.
• Managing health care costs without a group plan: I looked into this when I was a grad student at Tulane, and it was very difficult to get decent insurance coverage at a reasonable rate.
• How to become a vegetarian, the easy way: With reasons! I’m not going to tell you that you should become vegetarian, but if you’re curious about it, this post is a good place to start.
• Intelligence and Achievement: by Rafe Champion on Catallaxy. Discusses research on how intelligence of various kinds does or does not relate to achievement (outside of academia).
• The Funeral Speech of Pericles: quoted by Rafe Champion on Catallaxy
• Names: I said before that if you don’t remember someone’s name, just ask. If it’s as bad as in this comic though, you’re in big trouble.

My new header images are done, courtesy of Gerit Kreuzer-Plank. I’m quite happy with how they’ve turned out. We tried to include relevant imagery for each of the major subsets of pages on the blog/site.
